Biography
Margarita Saad gained a BA in cinema studies from Sorbonne Nouvelle-Paris III in 1991. She exhibits in galleries and takes part in art festivals all over the world, including Thousand Plateaus in Chengdu, the Galeria Alfama in Madrid, Palacio Aranburu in Tolosa (Spain), Galería Goya in Zaragoza, the Alliance française in Uruguay and the Institut Français in Denmark. She has been awarded prestigious grants from the French government such as the Institut Français/Taipei Artists Village Residency and presented her work in the “Croisement France-Chine” festival in 2009. She was invited to give talks by the famous ARTCO journal in Taiwan and lead workshops in China and Taiwan.
In the UK, she won the prestigious Leverhulme Trust Artist in Residence Grant for a project in association with the French department ( Prof. T. Mathews) at University College London on the materiality of text and the translation into English of Oulipian writers (visit the blog retracing this experience: Translation, transcription by Margarita Saad, Oulipian art from French to English).
The appeal of mystery and the pleasure in play are at the heart of her work and of her research on scale and materials. In collaboration with artists coming from other cultures and backgrounds, as well as in her solo work, she explores the universality of the sign. In her installations of magical landscapes, in her paintings and sculptures, she avoids imposing a single meaning and looks constantly for multiplications of perspectives. Urban landscapes and architecture, popular art and nature are constant sources for her work. She maintains a silent conversation with writers concerned with similar topics: after her « Homage to Khalil Ghibran », she created a series of paintings around the Oulipo member Georges Perec, and another based on the works of the Argentinian Borges. She has continued working on materiality of text, foreign languages and the voyage of translation in her project « Translation, Transcription » in the U.K. and for the reading-performance on the three Franco-Uruguayan writers Lautréamont, Laforgue and Supervielle created at the Bibliothèque nationale de France in May 2017.
Born in Uruguay, Margarita left that country for France as a child and works in Paris.
